Renters: Take Action

Notice an error on this page? Please let us know!

Arkansas has some of the least favorable laws for renters in the United States.

  • It’s the only state that doesn’t have an implied warranty of habitability in state law, meaning landlords aren’t legally required to maintain properties in livable condition
  • No state statute requiring landlords to make essential repairs
  • Criminal eviction statutes that can make failure to pay rent a criminal offense
  • Limited protections against retaliatory evictions
  • No state law prohibiting landlords from charging excessive security deposits

These legal challenges are compounded by other factors like rural poverty in parts of the state and aging housing stock in some areas.

We Can Change This

When renters join forces, real change becomes possible. Across the country, tenant unions and community organizations have successfully challenged unfair practices, won stronger protections, and improved housing conditions through collective action.

By organizing with neighbors, sharing resources, documenting violations, and speaking with a unified voice, renters can effectively counter the power imbalance that often exists between landlords and tenants. Even in states with weak tenant protections, organized renters have secured rent stabilization measures, fought illegal evictions, and pressured legislators to reform outdated laws.

Remember: What seems impossible to achieve as an individual tenant becomes achievable when renters stand together. Through solidarity and persistent advocacy, renters can transform the rental landscape and create more equitable housing systems for all.
