Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded health centers are designed to serve medically underserved populations. Currently, 1 in 11 or almost 30 million people in the U.S. rely on a HRSA-funded health center for care, including 1 in 8 children, 1 in 5 rural residents, 1 in 3 people living in poverty, and 1 in 5 uninsured people.

Health centers are located in all 50 states and U.S. territories and provide primary medical and dental care, behavioral health, and substance use disorder services. Some health centers provide expanded services to include pharmacy, obstetrics, or vision care. To help individuals access services health centers assist patients with transportation, translation and interpretation, case management,  health education, and referrals. All services are provided regardless of a person’s ability to pay.

Addiction

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a chronic disease like diabetes. It can be treated with medication and behavioral therapy, which have been proven to work much more effectively than just suddenly stopping. People can and do recover from SUDs. Success rates for SUD treatment are similar to success rates for the treatment of asthma.

People dealing with SUDs need compassion. When people do not feel welcome or accepted, they’re less likely to be honest and ask for help so they can create stability in their lives and be productive members of society.

Anyone can become addicted. In fact, many people with substance use disorders have jobs and families and do not exhibit obvious challenges in everyday functioning.

Alcohol Use

Drinking too much puts you at risk for serious health consequences, including injuries and many diseases.

There is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant and there is no safe time to drink alcohol during pregnancy. All types of alcohol can be harmful, including all wines and beer. Do not drink if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, or are trying to get pregnant.

Everyone can benefit from drinking less alcohol or not drinking at all.

This tool checks your drinking and can give advice. If you want to drink less, it can also help you build a plan to make healthier choices.
